There are lots of new AR-15 owners out there and just as many long-time owners who ask us the same question: how do I disassemble my AR-15 bolt assembly? We wanted to put together this quick guide to disassembling your own bolt to help you guys out.
First, get your bolt out of your rifle and find a clear spot you can lay the bolt and parts out on.
Turn the bolt so you can see the left side of the carrier.
Locate the firing pin retaining pin and remove it by pulling straight away from the bolt carrier.
Remove the retaining pin completely and set it aside.
Turn the bolt carrier over and locate the firing pin.
Remove the firing pin by pulling the base of it toward the back of the bolt carrier.
Completely remove the firing pin and set it aside.
Turn the bolt right side up and locate your bolt face. Make sure it is pushed all the way back into the bolt carrier.
Locate the cam pin.
Rotate the cam pin 90°.
Remove the cam pin by pulling it straight out from the bolt carrier.
Remove the cam pin completely and set it aside.
Now remove the bolt by pulling it straight out from the bolt carrier.
Remove the bolt completely and set aside.
Now your entire bolt assembly is disassembled and ready for cleaning and inspection. When you're ready to reassemble, follow these directions backward but pay attention to the orientation of the bolt in the carrier. Make sure your extractor is on the right side of the bolt.
After this just follow the disassembly guide in reverse order. We hope this quick quide helps! Let us know in store or use the 'ask us a question' form to the right if you have any questions.
