SGA's Learn to Shoot class introduces new or inexperienced shooters to firearms, safety and proper techniques. The class is open to any students of legal age to possess a firearm. We teach safety, grip, dominate eye, proper stance and sighting. Each student will shoot a revolver and a semi auto pistol. We provide the handguns, ammunition, as well as ear and eye protection.
* Each student will receive a 5% discount on the purchase of any firearm after taking this class.

Cost: $95
Duration: 5 Hours
Course Overview:
This comprehensive five-hour instruction teaches Texas gun laws for both open and concealed carry, followed by a practical shooting proficiency test. The course includes written testing on legal requirements, practical firearm handling drills at three ranges (3, 7, and 15 yards), and certification to the state confirming you've completed proper training. Upon completion, graduates receive a License to Carry from the State of Texas valid for five years, plus a free range pass ($18 value) and 5% off firearm purchases if bought within five days.
Requirements:
Bring your valid driver's license or ID (Texas residency not required), eye and ear protection, and a handgun with fifty brass-cased rounds. Rentals and ammunition are available for purchase at the store. Arrive 10-15 minutes early to complete required paperwork before class begins.
Cost Breakdown:
Spring Guns & Ammo fee: $95 (includes range fees) | State LTC fee: $40 ($25 for veterans) More Detail Here | Fingerprinting: ~$10 separately. Total investment is approximately $145.
Test Difficulty:
The written test covers legal knowledge discussed in class—attention during instruction should be sufficient to pass. The shooting portion requires loading, operating, and shooting a firearm with basic proficiency across three distance ranges (20 rounds at 3 yards, 20 at 7 yards, 10 at 15 yards). This is specifically a gun law course with shooting competency test, not a beginner pistol class.
Eligibility & Renewal:
You qualify if you have no felony or Class A/B misdemeanor history, chemical dependency issues, or domestic violence incidents within the last five years. The State of Texas - not SGA - conducts background checks and makes final decisions; contact DPS with application questions. Renewals are now completed online without attending an in-person course.
Additional Notes:
The course does not cover basic pistol instruction (available separately in "Learn to Shoot" classes). SGA's Spring location offers rental firearms and ammunition for purchase at all locations.
More Detail can be found on the State of Texas DPS website here: Texas DPS LTC Site

This streamlined one-hour session is designed for individuals who have already completed online LTC training and need only to complete the practical shooting proficiency test with an instructor present. The in-person portion focuses exclusively on demonstrating firearm handling skills at three ranges (3, 7, and 15 yards). Upon successful completion of the shooting test, you will receive state certification for your License to Carry valid for five years.
Requirements:
Bring your valid driver's license or ID (Texas residency not required), eye and ear protection, and a handgun with fifty brass-cased rounds. If you don't have a firearm, rentals are available at the store. Arrive 10-15 minutes early to complete any remaining paperwork before the shooting test begins.
Cost Breakdown:
SGA fee for shooting proficiency test: $95 (includes range fees) | State LTC certification fee: $40 ($25 for veterans) | Fingerprinting: ~$10 separately. Total investment is approximately $145 plus your online course cost (typically anywhere from $40 to $125). Or take the complete course at SGA for less!
Test Format:
The shooting test consists of 20 rounds at 3 yards, 20 rounds at 7 yards, and 10 rounds at fifteen yards—totaling 50 rounds across three distance ranges. You must demonstrate proficiency in loading, operating, and firing a firearm with smooth, controlled, safe handling throughout the exercise.
Eligibility:
You qualify if you have already completed an approved online LTC course from a State of Texas recognized provider and have no felony or Class A/B misdemeanor history, chemical dependency issues, or domestic violence incidents within the last five years. The State of Texas - not SGA - conducts background checks and makes final decisions; contact DPS with application questions.
Additional Notes:
